A post-covid return to EVA's Taipei to New York 777 flight

We're back from our Japan and Taipei trip and even though it took a lot of finagling, the actual travel was really smooth and pleasant. We've taken this 15 hour flight before, back in 2017, and it was largely the same.

PROS

  • EVA Air seems to be pricing one ways at half the cost of round trips
  • Espresso onboard!
  • They have new, very nice pajamas and the XL ones fit me now
  • They kept the cabin at a reasonable temp this time (was super hot before)
  • Dual jetways and very orderly boarding
  • Great lounges in Taipei with showers and hot food
  • Super attentive and helpful staff
  • Extensive online menu for pre-booking meals

NEUTRAL

  • The flight didn't get any shorter and the plane didn't get any faster, so it's still 15 hours in the air ;)
  • Seat-back entertainment didn't have a ton of good options
  • Oddly-timed flight, you take off at 7pm, sleep a ton (if you're lucky) then land at 10pm and sorta need to go to bed again.

CON

  • Krug is gone (but the Laurent Perrier is decent)
  • Wi-Fi is still very intermittent and glitchy, and their competitors' Wi-Fi has gotten a lot better since 2017
  • So have their competitors' Business Class seats - I really hope they put privacy doors on their seats during their next cabin refresh
  • Their old Rimowa amenity kits are now knockoffs with a Ferragamo label
  • No personal air vents (gaspers)
  • AKA a bunch of first-world problems :)

I love how each of the showers in the lounge has its own name

Avo likes boarding the plane smelling fresh and clean (and not like a ham sandwich)

We were on a Sanrio plane but it wasn't official "Sanrio service" so none of the usual fun swag

Welcome chocolate and drinks

Wi-Fi pricing. Remember to set your Wi-Fi preference to Low Data Mode for those capped plans!

Dinner

Sleeeeeeep

Cabin crew make up a bed with a padded seat cover for you

New jammies (and Avo has a new hat!)

Breakfast

Hooray for a cabin crew that will actually use the onboard espresso machine!

"Breakfast" is served around 7:30pm New York time, soooo....

I also had some fruit for dessert before the after-dinner mint
