Great news! JAL and ANA slashing fuel surcharges by 60%

Both Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines base their fuel surcharges on jet fuel price indices (as I pointed out last year). They've just announced that the surcharges are being slashed by 60% for tickets issued in April and May. According to NHK, they review the surcharge rates every two months. This should bring the copay on their super-affordable Economy reward tickets back down to the $100 range.

So many people are speculating on what Amex is going to do with the Platinum card when they refresh it on Friday! Finding and collecting Japanese Railway station stamps

From Pokemon to Neko Atsume to shuinchou temple books , Japanese people love collecting things. If you've ever taken a ride on the glorious shinkansen bullet trains or ridden one of their extremely clean and punctual urban lines, then you know there's also a national obsession with great trains. The Eki stamp ("station stamp") is where those two obsessions meet . Most Japan Railways stations (including urban metro ones like the Yamanote line) have a unique stamp reflecting that station's history. Kids and train nerds (called "Tetchan") buy cute little books to collect the stamps of all the stations they've been to. The USA has a similar program with the national parks . One of my favorite stamps… All train-nerdiness aside, an Eki stamp book makes a great souvenir : it's flat, small, cheap, and light... and shouldn't take but a few moments to do when you're out and about. Navigating from Narita Express Shibuya Station to Hachiko Statue

Here's another quick post for my friend doing his first big international trip: a guide to finding Hachiko from the Shibuya Narita Express (N'Ex) platform. First off, look at the Shibuya Station map (click to enlarge). Narita Express arrives on track 3 or 4, down a long hallway from the rest of the station. If you look at the map, there are actually several ways to get to Hachiko, but they aren't labeled very well. If you look closely at this last frame of this first video, you'll see you're directed to go downstairs. Shibuya Station map After that, you head downstairs, where you actually have to walk the entire length of another train platform to get to the desired exit. If you're using a Japan Rail pass, you have to go through the staffed exit and show your pass to the employee. Once you pass the gate head outside and look for the crowd!
