Trip Report: Asiana A380 Seoul to New York in Business Class (ICN-JFK)

I wasn’t gonna write this report, but Asiana has “been gonna” be absorbed by Korean air for like a decade now but it still hasn't happened yet, so maybe this will be of use to someone. It was flight OZ 224 and I was in seat 10K (upstairs).

How I did it

179,000 Amex points (this is the total after the now-moribund Pay With Points 35% rebate)

Pros

  • A380s are amazing. Huge and so quiet inside.
  • There's a big front lounge and you'll likely have it alllll to yourself. It's better than a private jet in some ways
  • Huge front bathroom
  • Perfect side storage bins
  • Espresso
  • Friendly and competent service
  • Good food
  • Decent airport lounge with Washlets
  • Split boarding (two jetways is important for such a big plane)
  • Transiting Seoul means no clearing Korean customs
  • JFK (not Newark)
  • Bathrooms have toothbrushes and lotions and mouthwash so you don’t have to open the amenity kit to get just one thing out of it.

Cons

  • No Wi-fi (according to their staff, only their A350s have it)
  • Hot cabin (Asian airlines LOVE a 26º C/78º F cabin)
  • No gaspers
  • Lots of people ordering the mid-meal instant ramen snack so there's lots of instant ramen smell and clanking metal chopsticks on ceramic bowls while you're trying to sleep
  • Their website won’t let you pick your seat even though it looks like you can. You have to call.

Tip

  • The seats alternate between aisle- and window-adjacent. Get the window.
  • Tray table can function like a mini door

Seoul airport has so many cute mascots and tasty treats to bring home

Seoul Asiana lounge has Washlets!

I'm always grateful when I get to fly one of these huge, discontinued birds

I will never get tired of stairs on a plane

I thought there'd be a self-serve bar here mid-flight, but no...

Mattress pad, blanket, pillow, slippers, amenity kit, water bottle, towelette. Zodiac Solstys lie-flat seat.

Loooove the site storage compartment

Haaaate the lack of air vents in a hot cabin

Get yourself a portable fan that can be plugged in to USB. You'll need it to run all 14 hours of this flight.

The IFE is kinda mid. bring a pre-loaded iPad

No idea why literally NO ONE uses the front lounge.

Spent most of my waking hours in my own "private little plane"

Huge bathroom by the lounge

If the plane had had Wi-fi, I could have easily spend another few hours aboard. Sadly the new long-distance Sydney to NYC planes won't have these lounges. Just a "yoga area" to prevent DVT.

Menus and Food

Octopus appetizer

Beef Ssambap. Dumbfounded at how airline catering can produce a bundle of leaves from 15 different plants with all of them being so perfectly fresh and crisp.

Beautiful fruit

mugwort and red bean confection with candied walnuts

****

Pre-landing meal appetizer

Perilla seed porridge with chicken

Always a gold star from me if you've got onboard espresso. C'mon Americano and matcha cake!

Chef avo hit the free liquor too hard and didn't prepare those last few dishes
